Exploring the High Holy Days with Rabbinic Intern Caitlin Brazner
Rabbinic Intern Caitlin Brazner will lead us with an exploration of the High Holy Days, seeking to gain new insights into this sacred time of year. When do the High Holy Days begin? Hint- it's technically not Rosh Hashanah! Which prayer was eliminated and then reintroduced to our Yom Kippur observances due to anti-semitic prejudices and fears? Why do we throw bread in a river on Rosh Hashanah- where did this tradition come from? Join us as we begin our Summer Studies by diving into the Days of Awe and learning more, together, about this pinnacle of our Jewish calendar.
June 8, 22; July 13 & 27; and August 3 -
Artistic Depictions of Familiar Bible Scenes with Rabbinic Intern Ilana Symons
Rabbinic Intern Ilana Symons will explore artistic depictions of familiar bible scenes. Together, we will examine texts with our artists' glasses on, asking: What is the tone of this scene? What color palette or symbols might you use in a painting of it? How do commentaries affect how we envision the story and its characters? Then, we will use the visual arts as an additional commentary on the text- from classical to modern art. Each artist adds their own perspective to biblical scenes; together, we will consider what this medium contributes to stories and characters many of us have met time and time again. With a fresh perspective, we will unlock these biblical interpretations and embrace our creativity! In our first session, we will focus on the story of Adam and Eve.
