Director of the Skirball Museum at
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion  

Abby Schwartz is the director of the Skirball Museum on the historic Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion. She serves on the board of the Mayerson JCC and Rockdale Temple, and lectures widely on Jewish art. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Rochester, and her Masters in Art History from the University of Cincinnati.

 

Raphael Soyer: Reluctant Jewish Artist

A prolific painter, draftsman, and printmaker, Raphael Soyer is often described as an American scene painter and as a Social Realist. He struggled against being described as a Jewish artist. This session will investigate the scope of Soyer’s long career and his reluctance to be identified as a Jewish artist.
