Shabbat (Hebrew for Sabbath or rest) refers to the seventh day of creation in the Torah, and the ubiquitous Jewish day of rest. It is also often known in Yiddish as Shabbos, and is among the most sacred recurring events in the Jewish calendar, celebrated every week from Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. Shabbat is a unifying event that brings Jews together all over the world in shared prayer, song and joy! On Shabbat mornings, we also read the weekly parashah (portion) from the Torah and derive meaning from it in the context of our contemporary life. The modern home celebration usually includes blessings of the Shabbat candles, wine/grape juice, challah, a special meal shared with family and friends, and extra time to relax and rest. We say goodbye to Shabbat each week with the ritual of Havdalah (Hebrew for separation) and wish one another a shavua tov, a good week ahead.

*Celebrate Shabbat with your Rockdale Temple community every Friday evening at 6:15pm! Adults may also join in Torah study of the weekly portion at 9:30am on Saturday mornings, followed by Shabbat morning services at 10:30am. Once per month, families with young children are invited to celebrate together at FoRT Shabbat, either Friday evening, Saturday morning, or Saturday evening.
